Dear Head Officer,
Reporting from Earth, your fellow deputy Qiy Shel to intergalactic headquarters of Varnderdadd. My finding on earth would interest a Varndan eye. I have learned lots of these earthlings. What has interested me and surprised me the most is how these earthlings are cruel yet caring they can be to one another. I have learned this in my read of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by O’Connor. This story is about a family whose vacation is ruined by a car accident. Car is what earthlings like to call a transportation system. Going back to the story, after this horrific event, this family find themselves in another mess. The problem is a man that goes by the name Misfit (with good reason) has found them at the sight of the accident. Misfit is a runaway prisoner accompanied by two other men. These men then decided to kill the males in the family which includes the father and son and use their resources. When gunshots are fired, the grandmother(the father’s mother)cried, “Bailey Boy” (O’Connor). Ironically, the mother had warned her family that the Misfit was coming in their direction and that they should not go on vacation or if they do, they should go somewhere else.“I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it." While one earthling can be so cruel to the point of killing, another can be so caring.
Earthlings are very talkative on certain topics that they might agree or disagree on. A man by the name of Allen Ginsberg wrote a poem called America. A poem is a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song, and that is usually rhythmical and metaphorical as defined by earthlings. In this poem, Ginsberg talks about how he has been hurt by America. He does not have really reasoning to do, but jumps from one topic to another. He says “I sit in my house for days on end and stare at the roses in the closet.” (l. 31) later, he jumps to another unrelated topic “Asia is rising against me.” (l. 50) Asia is one of the biggest continents on earth. Earthlings call the principal land masses of the earth continents which include Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
Communication is vital to these earthlings and their survival. They are verbal, especially when it comes to their background; they enjoy telling others about their cultures, regions, people etc. In a story called “Sonny and The Narrator” Sonny fails to communicate his trouble to the narrator who happens to be his brother. Another good point that another earthlings communicate in a discussion, “He wants to become a musician, but ends up in the navy, as he later admits, running from drugs.”(Rylee Erickson) This would later in the story affect and hurt Sonny very much. The story was a symbolism of just how important communication among earthling is.
Limitations greatly affect earthlings as well. These limitations can in times hurt and help them. This reminds me of another story about a wife and a mother. In this story called “The Revolt of Mother” the mother’s breaking point is reached. This is caused by the building of a cellar (area where animals are kept). The reason this construction bothers the mother is because the family does not have a stable house. Instead of building a house, the father builds a cellar even though he had promised to build a house for forty years and their daughter was getting married. When the mother learns of this, she comes up with an idea to cause an allusion and to have the father go away for a while. While the father was gone, they move their belonging into the cellar. The story goes “It took no more genius and audacity of bravery for Wolfe to cheer his wondering soldiers up those steep precipices, under the sleeping eyes of the enemy, than for Sarah Penn, at the head of her children, to move all her little household goods into the new barn while her husband was away.”(Wilkins) “Mother makes a decision to do it on her own and father accepts that he was not listening to her needs.”(Lindsey Lorsung) The mother breaking point occurred and it helped accomplish her goal of getting a house.
Memories are a large part of earthlings. Earthlings want to store memories by taking photographs and videos (yes, they have not advanced passed this point, sorry to say) and also write about it. Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath are two writers known for doing exactly this. Anne Sexton had a short poem called Young about a memory of her as a child laying in bed “the wise stars bedding over me,” (ll. 8). She later continues by stating her father and mother “my mother's window a funnel of yellow heat running out, my father's window, half shut,”(ll. 9-11) from the text, I gained the knowledge that memories allow earthlings to remember the good times they had with their loved ones. They can also use it as a metaphor for other meaning to their memories that the individual themselves cannot explain.
Sylvia Plath is a woman who is hurt by her memories. She expresses this in her poem “Lady Lazarus.” This poem talks about her suicide attempts, she says “This is Number Three. What a trash To annihilate each decade.” Number three is the number of time she has tried to kill herself. The impulse of the speaker is the overwhelming desire to control the situation. Her personal experience is then compared to the resurrection of Christ (as I explained in the previous letter, Christ is the son of god to people who believe in Christianity) “Come in broad day light to the same place, the same face, the same brute.”
In conclusion, it is these earthlings nature to want to give and receive love; and a nature that must be exploited to the fullest in order to rectify the current state of the world. Malevolent, competition, hatred and the human capabilities of such are also intertwined into human nature. However, these natures only exist because it must, in order for love to exist but must not exist at all times and not to all beings.
Signing off,
Qiy Shel.
