The official word from the MCTC catalog:
ENGL 2232 American Literature 2 (3 credits) This course examines literature of the United States from after the Civil War through the present. You will read and consider fiction, poetry, and prose that reflect the diverse social, cultural, and literary experiences of the United States. MnTC: 6, 7 Prerequisite: ENGL 1110.
A few more thoughts:
That covers it fairly well in terms of the content of the course. Of course, there's more to a course than the content of the reading (all of this is hidden in that word examine in the first line of the description).
In addition to reading things from about the time of the American Civil War through the late 20th century, we will also be doing quite a bit of reading about these readings through various web resources. We will read extensivley in this course.
However, we won't just be reading; we'll be writing a great deal ourselves. Think about it: everything you could normally say in a face-to-face (F2F) class, you will have to write in this class. We'll be writing on the discussion boards, in quizzes, short writing assignments, emails, and on simple webpages (wiki pages) that we set up ourselves. We will also study how to use scholarly conventions of citation and evidence as we write about literature. Prepare yourself for some serious writing time.
